At the heart of one of Raleigh's most historic and beloved public spaces, the Stone Houses at Dix Park represent a new chapter for three buildings that have been part of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital campus for more than a century. The Superintendent's House, Physician's House, and Gatekeeper's Cottage, built in the 1920s, were thoughtfully restored and reopened to the public in 2024 as part of the continued transformation of Dix Park.
Our installation team had the opportunity to bring the landscape surrounding these historic buildings to life. Working within a public park requires a different approach than a private project. The landscape must be beautiful and inviting, but it must also withstand heavy foot traffic, provide clear access, and continue to look its best for the thousands of visitors who will experience the space throughout the year.
From planting and bed preparation to the finishing details that help connect the buildings with the surrounding park, our team worked to create a landscape that complements the historic architecture while welcoming visitors into the space. New gardens, walkways, seating areas, and accessible connections helped transform the Stone Houses into a destination where history, community, and the outdoors come together.
But for a public landscape, installation is only the beginning. Our maintenance team continues to care for the landscape as it matures, ensuring the plantings remain healthy, attractive, and ready for public use. Maintaining a highly visible park landscape requires ongoing attention to horticulture, pruning, seasonal needs, turf, irrigation, and the overall appearance of the property.
